TRENT

My name is Trent, and when I was 16 I was in a motorcycle accident. I got thrown from the motorcycle into a barbed wire fence, which broke my neck and a lot of the bones in my face. I was not wearing a motorcycle helmet, because I was just riding around my grandparents’ farm and thought that I didn’t need one, but obviously I did.  Luckily, just the bone broke in my neck, and no nerves were hurt, and so I wasn’t paralyzed at all, which was extremely lucky. I got taken to the hospital, where I stayed for a week before getting to leave. I had my surgery halfway through my hospital stay, and the two doctors who fixed my face were very kind and did their job very well. After I healed up, including the months that it took for the swelling to go down, people couldn’t tell that I had been in an accident at all. I got through the experience with the help of my family, especially my mother, who stayed in the hospital with me for the whole week. There was a lot of pain and misery with such severe injuries, but I took it an hour at a time and managed to keep on track to a fast recovery. Some nights and days were awful, while others were much more bearable, but because of all the support I received from friends and family, I came out of the experience thankful for everyone’s concern and love. I know that I am lucky to be alive, and even more lucky to not have any permanent injuries, and it certainly made me aware that I should not take my life for granted.
